5. Cancrum oris (Noma)
This infectious disease, as the image above depicts, destroys the soft and hard tissues of the mouth, cheeks and jaw. It is devastating to many impoverished children that contract it in Asia and Africa. It spreads from bacteria as a result of poor hygiene, lack of nutrition or contaminated water. It was common in World War II-era concentration camps due to horrible conditions.
